By mid-October 1958, Guevara and Cienfuegos, chief of the Camp Columbia army headquarters, had moved their troops into the Las Villas and Pinar del Río provinces. Presidential elections were held on November 3. Because Cubans knew that the election would be rigged, many voters boycotted the vote.

While Castro was preparing his men for battle, Batista came under attack from several directions.
