The Smithsonian Institution amassed its comprehensive Southwestern collection between 1879 and 1904. As the Smithsonian was redirecting its collecting activities to other areas of the world, other institutions, including the Chicago Field Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, the Milwaukee Public Museum, and the Heye Foundation, begem collecting on a large scale in the Southwest.

Anthropologists, by their collecting activities, inadvertently helped to introduce Anglo manufactured goods into the pueblos and helped to transform traditional material culture into ethnic art. In the case of other crafts, production was declining at the same time that the objects were being collected en masse, such that certain items of material culture disappeared entirely from the villages (Hardin 1983). Today these objects can be seen only in museums, which have saved them for posterity. So many items were taken that when anthropologists became actively involved in reviving native crafts in the 1920s, they used artifacts in museum collections as models.
